Rest Is Not a Paycheck

Hi, it’s Steve.
A few weeks ago, the same limiting belief found me and a friend within a single day.
My friend first. They’re running on fumes — close to real burnout — and when we talked, they finally said their rule out loud, maybe for the first time: if there’s still work to do, rest has to wait. Here’s the problem with that rule: the work is never done. Especially as a small business owner, which they are. Which means the rest never comes. My friend knows this. The rule doesn’t care.
The next morning, it was my turn. I was heading out to meet a friend for coffee before my volunteer shift at Rosie’s Place, and I felt the old tug: you haven’t done enough yet to sit in a café. I know that voice well — I obeyed it for decades. But something shifted for me this spring. I finally admitted that I need, and want, and yes, deserve more than working my butt off for the rest of my life.
So I went for coffee with my friend. That’s it. That’s the whole rebellion — a cup of coffee, before the work was done instead of after.
Because here’s what I keep learning: rest is not a paycheck. It isn’t something you’re owed after enough hours, and there’s no amount of finishing that finally unlocks it. Treating rest as a reward means placing it permanently on the far side of a to-do list that regenerates every night. The belief feels responsible. It’s actually a trap — and I watched it squeeze someone I care about in the same twenty-four hours it tugged at me.
Many of us compound this dilemma by turning free time into more to-do lists, more things to accomplish before we “earn” our rest, our joy, our life.
I’m getting better, for sure. But the tug still comes. I don’t think it retires. You just get better at hearing it, and meeting the friend for coffee anyway.
A question to sit with this week: What’s one small thing that recharges you — and what are you making yourself do to “deserve” it? What would happen if you realized this week you can do it whenever you want, even before the work is done — before you’re running on empty?
One thing: On August 18 at noon ET, I’ll be doing a live talk on Aura on “The Relationship Between Rest and Growth” — pretty relevant, huh? https://aurahealth.io/refer/aura-55u8c/guest-pass?channel=CopyLink
And if something in this letter landed and you want to talk it through, my calendar is always open for a conversation:
Sending lots of good energy your way,
Steve
